Is one of meaning of the pleats of the hakama and is one of the seven virtues in budo practice.

Many times we operate under the assumption that having self-esteem also means thinking that we deserve special treatment and are better than other people. Where does our sense of entitlement come from? Sadly, entitlement is encouraged by competition that has become the heartbeat of our society. Since only the winners count, it is okay to do whatever it takes to advance your position and the accompanying rewards. The problem mainly occurs when winning becomes the only goal. It is sad that our current society lacks the promotion and practice of humility. Budo practioners should understand that competition is just means to polish oneself. A contest is a good way to test your skill and humility. We must strive to be mindful and keep our emotions in check. Budo training can be tough, to be able to strengthen our minds and endure hardships. This all overcome defeat, to be humble in winning and maintain self respect.
