Kendo is to forge the human spirit and character. Kendo practice is an arduous process. A lot of tiring exercises and repetition to polish the mastery of movements. The idea is to go through hardships in training to forge people to overcome difficulties in life. Perseverance and patience are needed to be successful in a Kendo journey and in life. Courtesy and manners are important things to observe in the dojo, and hopefully extends outside the training area and into our lives. If somehow an individual can improve, so does society - no matter how few. Kendo study however is not a guarantee to be a better person, in my own opinion. Just like anything, there are good and bad outcomes of the practice or no result at all. I am sure you guys can name some negative effects in the practice of martial arts in general. However, Kendo is not for self defense. It is also not intended as a way of sword fighting in achieving the practical and effective use of Japanese sword. Kendo is a martial arts that is sportive in nature which was derived from an older martial arts Kenjutsu in which is created to eliminate opponents. As you can see, the use of swords in a modern battlefield is already obsolete. People practice it for the love of the art and preserve it's teachings that can be applicable in real life.
