Mokusō

As we sit in seiza and meditate, we try to focus on our breathing. It should be coming from our hara. Our breathing technique is important in striking and cutting to generate power. We meditate before the practice to get rid of our preoccupation. This gives us space and focus during training. We mokusō to get rid of emotions that can be a hindrance to training. We try to be aware of the present moment. We must remember the importance of awareness in sword study. This is most important to shinken practice. If we are too pre occupied and emotional, it is best to avoid practice with live blades. Even in kumitachi, the lack of presence of mind is highly risky. In shinai geiko, we need self control and awareness. We must remember that our partners in training and not punching bags for stress relief. Generally speaking, we should have a clear mind. In shiai, these mental gaps leads an opportunity for the opponent to strike or missing an opportunity to attack. Going back to mokusō - sit and try to observe your surrounding, you will hear your breathing , your surrounding, the smell and feel the temperature. Don't try to think about it, just be aware of the present moment. This is difficult, but we must exercise and discipline our mind. Mokusō after practice is a chance to relfect the lessons and try let go of any frustrations during training.
